THE HISTORY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF ROCKINGHAM
In 1966 the District Governor of District 245, Dr Boyd Butterworth appointed Past President Alan Smith of the Rotary Club of Fremantle, as his special representative to survey the districts of Rockingham and Kwinana with a view of establishing a Rotary Club in the area.
On October 24th 1966 PP Alan Smith together with Fremantle President Jack Sweeney met with local businessmen TG Smith, G Sherriff, E Arch Deacon, R Carey and Dr EB England. These gentlemen were requested to submit a list of businessmen for the proposed new club and 44 names were submitted.
On the 1st of December 1966, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fremantle, the inaugural meeting was held in the Shire Hall, Rockingham, the club was named the Rotary Club of Rockingham-Kwinana.
The following officers and directors were elected -
President - TG (Tee Gee) Smith
Vice President - GF (George) Sherriff
Secretary - RW (Dick) Carey
Treasurer - JJE (Earn) Arch Deacon
Club Service - C (Colin) Spence
Vocational Service - B (Brian) Manwaring
Community Service - EB (Bert) England
International Service - T (Tom) Colley
Nineteen other Charter Members with the above attended the first meeting on the 19th of January 1967 held at Masonic Hall.
Induction night was the 26th of April 1967 at McLarty Hall, Charter night was the 10th of June 1967 and was held at Alfred Hines Crippled Childrens Home.
In March 1971, following sponsorship, a new club was formed as the Rotary Club of Kwinana-Medina, our club became the Rotary Club of Rockingham.
In 1981 DG Ron Sloan asked PP Ron Newbey, PP Les Godley and PP Murray Forbes to survey the Rockingham area to ascertain whether another Rotary Club was needed. The Rotary Club of Rockingham Districts (later the Rotary Club of Palm Beach) was chartered on the 9th of June 1982.
In 2007 the Rotary Club of Safety Bay/Port Kennedy closed with most members moving to our club.
In 2013 the Rotary Club of Rockingham completed the Club Visioning process and produced a Vision Statement that will be presented to the public as follows -
