Youth and Vocation Committee 2016-17
We have had a very successful year in youth and vocation.  In 2016 we provided graduation scholarships for 8 students in the local area.  We sponsored 3 students to go to the Conocophilips science experience, and one young man to travel to the United States to take part in a science summer program.  We also sponsored Living Waters Lutheran college $500 to take part in their Pedal Prix.  St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School also received 30 microscopes to help enhance learning in the area of science.  We had a request of support from a young local woman who wanted to attend an Art Program in the United States, we sponsored her $1000 towards her trip.  At Makybe Rise primary school there were 4 students who were unlikely to be able to afford to attend their school camp, we covered 50% of the cost of their trips   Along with our local applications and requests for support, we also contributed support throughout the state.  We contributed $500 towards the Young Endeavour program, and $2500 to Camp Kulin towards the running of their program.
Our committee felt that it was important to continue to support our Rotary Programs, and as such we sponsored 3 campers to Handicamp, as well as paying the $500 so that all campers could go to Peel zoo.  We sent one student to RYPEN, as well as contributing $300 to the running of the RYPEN weekend.
I think the most exciting part of our year as the youth committee has been our involvement with the youth exchange process.  We began by sponsoring Peel Week, an exchange student get together, $500 to assist with their activities.  This was a great opportunity for our club to look through the window of youth exchange and see the exciting opportunities that await.  We have successfully sent Tamira Thompson on her exchange to the Czech Republic, and are in the process of making arrangements for our Inbound student, Neele, from Germany. The coming year should be exciting for our club as we get the pleasure of sharing in the exchange experience with Neele.
Our Rotary year has come to a successful and exciting culmination with our Pride of Workmanship Awards Ceremony last month.  This night was very well attended and held in high regard.  We saw five outstanding local employees being recognised for their commitment to excellence in their respective jobs.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank both my committee members, as well as the rest of the members of Rockingham Rotary Club.  I have had a wonderful year, and am grateful to have been entrusted with this position.
Thank you
